El Puntal is often ignored because it happens to be situated near one of the most popular and extended beaches in Asturias: Rodiles beach – they are separated by the Villaviciosa river, El Puntal being located at its West.
It’s a rather small semi-urban beach (100-150 meters) surrounded by a wooden & cement promenade that allows you to walk around the estuary and to other beaches located nearby like Bonome beach, Misiego and Rodiles.
If you are willing to find more feel free to download our beach app AsturPlaya and explore the estuary with low tide!
The beauty of El Puntal beach (and of Bonome beach too!) is that it doesn’t draw attention upon itself – if everyone is spending the summer at the Rodiles beach then El Puntal is the perfect place to run away from the crowd and have a picnic in the small forest between the river and the beach, in the shade.
El Puntal beach benefits from lifeguard service in high season, has parking, showers, bars and restaurants around. In high season a post renting canoes is also open for business.
It is also accessible for people with reduced mobility but it does not have the typical wooden platform to the beach like other beaches in Asturias have – so pay attention to the stones once you’re out of the forest.
El Puntal beach with low tide, on a sunny spring day
There’s a huge difference between El Puntal with low tide and El Puntal with high tide. While high tide still leaves a bit of the beach untouched, low tide uncovers a huge sandy area that’s worth exploring. The rocks near the cliffs are rather interesting and hide marine life that can usually be found in the estuary. Go explore!
