Puertu Cerrau beach in Llanes, Asturias

Puertu Cerrau beach, Llanes, Asturias

29 November, 2014

Puertu Cerrau is a beach that does not show on any map of Llanes and is not accessible on foot (boat only) – it is very representative for half of the beaches of Llanes that almost nobody knows, except a few locals and fishermen. Secluded, without road access, with crystal clean water, no amenities, nothing. Wild!

Why am I talking about it here and why did I add it to our beach app AsturPlaya then?

Cause you will probably see it if you love trekking and discovering secluded beaches.

Actually if you like to work hard to find less crowded beaches and happen to be near Cuevas del Mar beach, willing to walk a few kilometers to San Antonio beach then I bet there are 50% chances you will “discover a hidden cove” which nobody knows, does not show up on maps but somehow is very photographed and famous on Internet.

Now you know, it’s this one and it’s called Puertu Cerrau. It has no parking, no amenities, no descent. But you’ll still love it!

You can see it if you walk on the cliffs from San Antonio beach towards East or, even better, if you walk on the San Antonio headland. You will be able to see its Eastern side in all its splendor.

On a sunny summer day with low tide, Puertu Cerrau is simply breathtaking – the grass is green, the ocean water is turquoise and the mountains in the background are …. white! With snow!

See for yourself in the picture to the left… if you don’t believe me…

So you’re in Llanes and wish to avoid crowded beaches, what better way to do so that walking to the ones that are harder to get to?

A shorter route that involves Puertu Cerrau starts at the Cuevas del Mar beach and ends at the San Antonio beach. A 30 minutes walk following the coastline, perfect!

A medium route might start from the Guadamía beach, continue to Villanueva / Canal beach, Cuevas del Mar, Puertu Cerrau, San Antonio beach.

Let’s push it further to La Huelga beach, La Canal, Gulpiyuri sinkhole, San Antolín beach, you won’t regret it!

The long XXL route involves all the beaches of Llanes following the E-9 coastal trail. But hey, that is a lot!
