Completely missing from official maps and guides, Portiellu is a secluded nudist beach hidden in Llanes really close to the Toró beach. Why the secrecy?
Well, I don’t think there is any secrecy when it comes to the official tourism board, is just that Llanes has so many beaches that only the better preserved ones are showing up in the maps.
Portiellu is not a popular beach for many reasons. It has no parking, no amenities, no lifeguard and it’s surrounded by truly impressive beaches that steal all the spotlight.
Towards West you’ll find the popular Toró beach while towards East there is the Antilles beach. Both of them have amenities, easy access and a big parking so there is no need to invest in Portiellu (hey! locals also call this one Playa de Los Curas – The beach of the priests).
So why am I talking about Portiellu here?
Because it’s secluded and it’s a pleasant surprise to discover it. It’s rather small (80 meters is not much) and it completely disappears with high tide leaving behind just a belt of rocks for you to see.
Winter rains usually wash away its access and sometimes, its sand too, making it less than ideal for picky visitors. But this year I saw a lot of sand even if we got there with high tide so I hope you will see even more.
The beach has a W shape and what you see below is its Western side. Its Eastern side has a bit more rocks and this is where the access to the beach itself is located (in bad shape due to landslides but nothing too difficult).
And this is how you get to Portiellu, by crossing this meadow 🙂
So how do you get here? Where, it’s not too hard, you have more than one option.
Unfortunately there is no road access to Portiellu so our beach app Asturplaya (which relies on Google Maps or Maps to guide you) might take you to Toró which is close by. Not good enough.
You can get here on foot following a path that starts at the Toró beach and that follows closely the coastline (a short walk).
Another way is from the village of Cué by following the red bike lane that enters the city from Llanes – a trail enters it from the woods right when the village starts and if you take it and walk towards the sea you will get to Portiellu (see the picture to the right).
There are no indicators and, I believe, there will never be. It’s nudist and locals want to keep it private so they can have a place to enjoy when Toró and Antilles are crowded. Which is almost always.
If you’re into fishing than Portiellu is for you – a good fishing spot even for underwater fishing as long as you pay attention to the rocks. They are pretty sharp and resemble a lot the peculiar rocks that can be seen at Toró.
