Cagonera beach in Gijón, Asturias, Spain - panoramic view

La Cagonera beach, Gijón, Asturias

3 December, 2014

Caginera beach comes with more than one story to tell. First of all La Cagonera is no longer accessible by foot, a major landslide closed the only footpath that was built to reach it – and when I say major, I mean the biggest I have seen so far.

I never saw Cagonera before the landslide but I saw the stairs on top of the cliffs that used to go down to the beach and people told me it was easy to get to. Now if you really, really want to see it you will have to climb some huge rocks and the pile of earth (mud) that separates it from the Serín beach, its neighbor. Take a look for yourself:

Now, you either climb this, swim here from Serín or come here by boat – it is still a good fishing spot and I saw people practicing underwater fishing here. So why am I telling you all this?

Because it used to be a very popular beach and some maps and tourism websites still show it.

Because it was hard to find and we took it as a small victory when we finally got close to it although we could not actually touch the sand.

Because being now completely inaccessible to the large mass of people it suddenly seems more interesting. 🙂 Don’t you think?

The second story I owe you is related to the name of the beach. It’s actually a fishermen story but I believe it to be true.

It happens that this was a spot where fishermen “parked” they boats many years ago. But it’s also a spot where cormorants used to live in large numbers (you can still see some nowadays) and being so many they used to cover the rocks with their droppings.

So fishermen called the birds Cagones (birds that poop a lot) and the beach Cagonera 🙂 Aham! (clears throat embarrassed)… more pictures please!

Interesting things about the beaches of Gijón

You can get to Cagonera by taking a trail that was built on the coastline and links all the beaches of Gijón. Once here, you will have Serín beach really close to the West and the Estaño beach a little bit to the East. They are well worth a visit, as do all the beaches of this municipality – our beach app Asturplaya can take you to all of them, download it and start exploring!
