El Tranqueru beach, Carreño, Asturias

14 July, 2016

The beach of El Tranqueru is well know in Asturias but not very popular due to it being secluded and accessible by foot only – meaning there’s a high probability you won’t find it 110% full of people in the summer.

It’s located in a wide cove near the housing development of Xivares – you can reach it by foot through the Green Route (Vía Verde) trail which follows the coastline along an old railway line.

This trail, which passes right above the beach (you can see it in the gallery above), connects the village of Xivares to the holiday resort of Perlora, following the route of an old FEVE railway line. Right now you can only see it if you come from Xivares (leave your car somewhere between the houses there), the path being closed right before reaching the tunnel above El Tranqueru due to a massive landslide happening in 2013 if I remember correctly.

Before the landslide the beach could also have been reached from the opposite direction coming from the Carranques beach in Perlora. If you feel it’s too much info, download our beach app AsturPlaya – it will create a route for you and also show you the beaches around El Tranqueru beach.

You can see it’s a rather extended beach (250 meters) of sand, boulders and pebbles that almost disappears with high tide. It has no amenities and no lifeguard service, being mostly used by locals and fishermen.

You can see stairs going down (above picture, to the right) – a trail starts right from the Green Path.

This trail is usually destroyed every few years due to constant and violent winter storms so be prepared to see it in bad shape once every few summers/

Although El Tranqueru beach appears to be extending till the Aviao Headland (del Castiello) you will discover it does not, right there at the foot of the headland there is a smaller beach that seems to be called Playa Morís.

I never saw it on any map separated from El Tranqueru and I suppose it’s because people consider the entire cove one big beach. You can see it in the image to the right 🙂 and you can reach it from its neighbor.
