You will fall in love with Concha de Artedo! Guaranteed! One of the most popular and extended beaches in Cudillero, Concha de Artedo is a “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” kind of beach 馃檪 (yes, I know I have said this before, but both Concha de Artedo and Portizuelo beach deserve to be in this category).

Let’s start with the beginning. “Concha” in Spanish means Shell and this is exactly the shape of this beach and of a lot of the beaches of Asturias.

You will find Concha de Artedo beach in the village of Lamu帽o, in Cudillero, East of Punta Austera (The Austera Headland).

You can get here by car, by bike or by foot, the beach being easily accessible from a trail coming from Lamu帽o.

By foot is way nicer since you will cross forests, the final segment being a wooden platform actually, installed there to protect the swamps surrounding the Debera Spring that flows here into the sea. The landscape is magic, especially when the sun is setting!

Concha de Artedo is a beach of 2 halves because of the spring dividing it but also because both halves look rather different.

The amenities (showers, toilets), the lifeguard tower, the beach bar, the restaurant and the tiny hotel are all placed at its Western end. A few colorful houses are also built there around a concrete promenade surrounding this half-beach of gravel and almost no sand.

The Eastern end is a beach of white boulders that almost disappears with high tide. On top of the boulders is placed a wooden platform which is the signature and identity of Concha de Artedo. Storms come and go wiping away the platform but it gets repaired every time, cause Concha without its platform has no soul!

Concha de Artedo is a beach accessible for people with limited mobility, quite extended (about 700 meters long) and perfect for fishing. In the past it was constantly awarded with the Blue Flag eco-label but it lost it for the summer of 2015. Here’s a listing with all the Blue Flag awarded beaches of Asturias (I update this list every year, don’t worry!).
