A beach that is not a beach but a cove and a name that’s not exactly its name, how interesting is that? It’s hard to say the name of this place, it is Arbidel, Aberdil or Arvidel? That’s because in Spanish both V and B are pronounced B and so the name can be written with anyone of them without problems when it comes to speaking it.
This cove is so secluded and unknown that it doesn’t even show on maps. Nor in our beach app Asturplaya (yet).
That’s because the main belief is that tourists are not interested in such remote coves, small and (almost) without sand.
But I believe Arbidel used to have (at least some) sand before the huge storms that washed the shore away in 2013-2014.
And I also believe that not all tourists would rather walk the path that is drawn in front of them by the tourism information boards or conventional maps.
Some roads might take you to coves that are empty and you can really hear the coming and going of the sea instead of the noise hundreds of people make on a more popular beach.
It’s not hard to find, but also not easy.
It’s just outside the town of Ribadesella but you have to cross private meadows to get there (people are nice, there are small “stairs” in their fences where you can cross and in the summer the trails are easy to pick up) and follow the trail that (probably) fishermen or locals are usually making in the summer.
Note that these trails might not be obvious outside high season!
What you will find is stunning. Not very small, Aberdil is a cove of pebbles, rocks, boulders and very little sand hidden behind high, steep cliffs.
No amenities. No parking. No lifeguard. Nothing!
The trail is slippery when wet and probably fishermen have to build a new one every year (rain WILL wash it away, especially the winter storms).
So it might be dangerous if you don’t expect it but you might also enjoy the adventure and thrill. Just be careful…
But once there… you will have the entire place just for you! Oh, and behind you…. the mountains!
